Researching with Crowd Sourced Data

How can we use the general population to contribute accurate, useful, and plentiful research data that can then be used to infer reliable conclusions?

Implications
The Lichens Project focuses on lichens, but we intend for it to form something bigger. This website means to provide massive amounts of reliable data in short periods of time, which allows researchers to form conclusions quickly and accurately. Technology used to create our project can easily be transferred to any discipline which could allow our method to revolutionize the way data, especially environmental data, is colected. We hope to soon create an online platform for researchers to quickly and easily set up a crowd sourced data collection system.

Methods
We developed a simple user interface by creating many iterations of the project and having users test each one for ease of use. Data display was tested with several different map libraries/APIs. We ultimately went with Google Maps with some custom JavaScript.
